Ammunition

-WARNING--AMMUNITION

Death,
serious injury, and damage can result from the use of
the wrong ammunition, bore obstructions, powder overloads,
or incorrect components.

Always wear shooting glasses and
hearing protection.

Never use smokeless powder in any muzzleloader !!!

Never fire an unknown charge !!!

If you are uncertain as to which component your firearm is
loaded with, do not fire it -- you must unload your firearm
and remove the unknown components.

IMPROPER AMMUNITION DESTROYS GUNS

When purchasing Black Powder be certain that it is in the
original manufacturer’s container and that its granulation or type
is clearly marked on the label.

Follow the storage and handling
precautions which are on the label.

If you have any questions
concerning the safe handling or storage of Black Powder, write
to the manufacturer of the powder.

Additional information on
powder storage is available from:

The National Fire Protection
Association, PO Box 9146, Quincy, Mass. 02269.
Or call 1-800-344-3555. Ask for pamphlet # 495.

~~~~~~~
-WARNING
Never exceed the maximum load listed for your particular
firearm.
OVERLOADS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO
THE FIREARM AND INJURY AND/OR DEATH TO
THE SHOOTER OR BYSTANDERS AND DAMAGE TO
PROPERTY.
Pyrodex is a propellant powder designed for use in muzzleloading
cap lock rifles, pistols and shotguns.
Pyrodex is not a Black Powder.
In accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions,
Pyrodex relates closely to Black Powder on a volume to volume
basis (not weight of charge).
In other words, a black powder
measure set to dispense 70 grains of black powder will, in fact,
dispense approximately 52 grains of Pyrodex (by weight).
Page  13
~~~~~~~~~~~~

However, this lighter charge of Pyrodex will provide a charge
which is ballistically similar to 70 grains of Black Powder.

For all practical purposes, knowing the actual weight of a
charge of Pyrodex may be informative, but not necessary.

Your Black Powder measure will dictate the proper amount
by its graduations according to volume.

If you want to know
the actual comparative weight of a Pyrodex charge,

contact the Manufacturer,

Hodgdon Powder Co,

Shawnee Mission, KS,
66201.

~~~~~~~
-WARNING
The reader should bear in mind that MDM, LTD does not
manufacture powder of any type.
If there is ever a question as to the proper application
of a particular powder or the safety of a given charge, write to the
manufacturer of the powder.
Adhere to the safe handling and storage
precautions printed on the manufacturer’s container and never purchase
or use powders which have been removed from their original container
.
USE OF THE WRONG PROPELLANT MAY CAUSE INJURY AND/OR
DEATH TO THE SHOOTER OR BYSTANDERS AND DAMAGE TO
PROPERTY.
~~~~~~

POWDER CHARGE
Since Black Powder is sold in bulk, you are in complete control
of how you load your fi rearm.

Be sure to weigh each charge,
or use a dipper which holds the exact weight of powder you
wish to load.

Check to be sure that the dipper holds the correct
amount of powder by weighing a dipper full of powder before
you begin loading your fi rearm from it.

-WARNING--BLACK POWDER

Black Powder is an extremely sensitive propellant and is
readily ignited by heat, spark, static electricity, friction,
pressure, impact, etc.

Unlike smokeless powder, Black
Powder will ignite with great violence and rapidity even
when unconfined.

Black Powder should be handled only in very small
quantities.

Never load powder into the barrel directly from
a fl ask or other powder container - you run the serious risk
of explosion and severe personal injury.

Never smoke while handling Black Powder!

Page  14

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many shooters pre-weigh single charges into small
containers for use on the range or in the field.
Never fire a firearm near an open powder container,
or an explosion may result.
If you are not familiar with safe handling procedures for
Black Powder and for muzzleloading fi rearms in general,
you should obtain one of the authoritative Muzzleloader’s
Manuals and study it carefully before beginning to shoot.
BLACK POWDER IS EXPLOSIVE!
Note that Black Mag 3 and Pyrodex products are less dense
than FFG Black Powder and must only be used as measurefor-
measure substitute for FFG Black Powder. (Please refer to
information on page 14).
If you substitute Pyrodex powders
or Black Mag 3 for FFG Black Powder using a weightfor-
weight basis, you will overcharge your firearm and risk
serious injury.
PROJECTILES
Some MDM rifles and pistols may be shipped to you with a
sample pack of Dyno-Core Magnum bullets.
To Order More - Click Here
Through accuracy, testing and actual field hunting performance
these bullets have  proven to be one of the finest bullet
combinations available today.
These bullets are a true full bore caliber projectile seated
with a gas pressure seal on the rear of the projectile.
Their
performance is outstanding in our firearms, offering you higher
velocity, flatter trajectory and delivering increased terminal
energy.
All MDM firearms are designed with the bore diameters within
the suggested SAAMI specifi cation.
Typically, a .50 caliber
firearms is designed to use a .502/.505” diameter pure lead
round ball or lubricated conical bullet of pure lead, a .490”
round ball with a lubricated .010 - .015” thick cloth patch, or a
smaller diameter projectile encased in a .500”+ diameter sabot.
Bullets of all types can be purchased from your dealer, ready
Page  15
~~~~~~~~~~~~

to use, or can easily be cast at home with a small investment
in equipment.

Information on bullet casting is available from
the manufacturers of molds and casting equipment and from
various authoritative handbooks.

Your dealer should be able
to provide you with any equipment which you may require.

See “Lead Exposure” Warning, page 12.

All MDM rifl e caliber barrels have been designed utilizing
the optimum twist rate to achieve the best results with most
modern design bullet systems, pre-lubricated soft lead conical
projectiles, or jacketed or soft lead bullets encased in “sabots”.

Patched round balls generally do not deliver as high a level
of accuracy with this rifl ing twist, but may be safely used if
correctly loaded.

The use of non-saboted jacketed or alloy bullets is not
recommended as accuracy is generally not as satisfactory as
with the pure lead bullets.

They may be difficult to load and
may raise pressures to dangerous levels.

~~~~~~~~~~
Whatever projectile you select, you must remember that if it is
not a tight fit in the barrel when loaded, it could shift forward
off the powder charge and act as a bore obstruction, causing
the barrel to bulge or burst when fired!
It is your responsibility to select the proper lead ball/patch
combination of a lubricated conical lead bullet that fi ts securely
in the bore, yet is not excessively difficult to load, particularly
after a shot or two of black powder fouling has built up in the
bore.
Never load multiple projectiles into the barrel.
The rear-most
projectile slamming into the other projectiles when fired could
cause a burst barrel and severe personal injury.
Use only one bullet at a time.
Page  16
~~~~~~~~~~~~

SABOTS

Some projectiles designed for muzzleloading rifles are
considerably undersized from the bore diameter and are
encircled by a resilient synthetic or fiber “sabot” or “shoe”.

An undersize sabot can easily release its projectile to become a bore
obstruction, or the sabot itself can act as a bore obstruction.

Never lubricate a sabot - this can cause the saboted bullet
to slip forward up the bore and act as an obstruction when
fired, possibly resulting in destruction of the rifle and severe
injury to the shooter or bystanders.

If sabots are used, their
manufacturer’s directions must be scrupulously followed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
PATCHING
.490” diameter round ball projectiles of soft lead must be fi red
with a lubricated round linen or cotton cloth patch of .010 -
.015” thickness (about that of a gun cleaning patch) and about
1.5” diameter.
However, many shooters prefer to use lubricated
soft lead conical projectiles, and these often work best without a
patch, particularly if they are hollow-based.
Always follow the
instructions regarding patches that are furnished by the
manufacturer of the projectile (or bullet mold if you cast
your own bullets) that you have chosen.
The best lubricants
for patches are vegetable-based greases, synthetic lubricants
specifi cally designed for this use.
Petroleum-based lubricants
often char the patches when fi red and may leave excess residue
in the bore - don’t use them to lubricate patches for bullets.
SHOTGUN PAYLOAD
The MDM TOMWACKA Shotgun is designed for use with lead
shot only in sizes of #2 shot through #9 shot.
Suggested turkey
load consists of 70 to 100 grains of BlackMag3, Pyrodex Powder
or (2) .50 caliber, 50 grain Pyrodex pellets covered by a 1/8”
cardboard or fi ber over-powder wad and 2 or 3 1/8” felt wads.
Add up to, but do not exceed 2 1/4 oz of #4 or #6 shot and cover
Page  17
~~~~~~~~~~~~

with a 1/16” cardboard or fi ber over-shot wad.

The MDM field
specialists recommends a duplex payload of 50% #4 and 50% #6
shot.

Please refer to a black powder loading manual for additional
suggested loads and wad confi gurations.

Use of black powder
shot cups are optional, and may improve long range results.

PERCUSSION CAPS (#11 & MUSKET)
& 209 SHOTSHELL PRIMERS

A percussion cap is a small metal cup, the interior top of which
is coated with a priming mixture.

This priming mixture is
usually covered with a foil or paper liner. It fi res when struck
a blow.

A #209 primer is a similar type ignition source as a percussion
cap with the exception that it is sealed tighter and less
susceptible to moisture in wet hunting conditions.

It fires when struck a blow.

The cap or primer is placed on the correct nipple and when
struck by the firing pin / striker, the priming compound
explodes, igniting the powder charge.

The cap or primer should
fit the nipple only tight enough so that it does not fall off when
the barrel is elevated.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE CAPS OR PRIMERS WHICH
ARE TOO TIGHT FOR THE NIPPLE. DO NOT TRY TO
FORCE OR POUND ANY OF THE IGNITION SOURCES
ONTO THE NIPPLES, AS A PREMATURE DISCHARGE
COULD RESULT.

~~~~~~~~~~
MDM Break-Open-Action series firearms have been supplied
with the all new, one piece design, “Incinerating-Ignition
System” which uses only #209 shotshell primers for magnum
performance.
DO NOT TRY TO USE #11 OR MUSKET CAPS!
Since both percussion caps & primers have an open end (which
is placed on the nipple when you are ready to fire), they are
susceptible to contamination.
Be careful when handling any of
these ignition sources, especially with oily fi ngers, and try to
Page  18
~~~~~~~~~~~~

keep water, grease, dirt and other contaminants out of the open
end of them.

Failure to do so is the main cause of misfires in
percussion muzzleloading fi rearms.

-WARNING--PERCUSSION CAPS &
SHOT SHELL PRIMERS

Percussion caps and primers are designed to fire as the result
of a blow (“percussion”).

A capped or primed firearm loaded with powder and
projectile or pellets, is loaded and will fire if the cap is struck.

Never clean, lubricate, disassemble, or work on a fi rearm
while it is capped or loaded.

Never install, remove, or carry
a capped or primed nipple or breech plug.

Always remove the percussion cap or primer before
unloading the barrel or disassembling the firearm.

~~~~~~~~~~
NEVER STRIKE A PERCUSSION CAP OR
SHOT SHELL PRIMER
~~~~~~~~~~
