BASIC SAFETY RULES OF MUZZLELOADING
AND HANDLING YOUR MDM FIREARMS


1.  ALWAYS seek professional instructions if you are unfamiliar
with muzzleloading firearms.


2.   ALWAYS be certain of the terminology or meaning of any
word used in this manual, and if not, call or write to MDM.
Listed below are a few words and their defi nition as intended
for use in this application:


“COCK” or “COCKED”- This refers to the operation or
position of the hammer being pulled in an “AFT” position,
compressing the hammer spring and placing the fi rearm in
a ready to “FIRE” condition.


“AFT” or “AFT POSITION”- This describes the rear most
position or direction of travel towards the rear of fi rearm.
“PRIME” OR “PRIMED”- The act of placing a musket or
percussion cap, or 209 shotshell primer onto a nipple or breech
plug.


“UNPRIME” or “UNPRIMED”- This refers to the absence
of, or the removal of a musket or percussion cap, or shotshell
primer from the nipple.


“CHARGE” or “CHARGED”- This applies to the presence of,
or the adding of, a propellant powder charge and projectile in
the bore of the firearm.


“UNCHARGE” OR “UNCHARGED”- This refers to the
condition after the powder charge and projectile have been
either fi red or removed and the bore is completely clear.
“LOAD” or “LOADED”- This refers to the condition of your
fi rearm after it has been both “CHARGED” and “PRIMED”,
and is in a ready to “FIRE” condition.


3.   ALWAYS know your muzzleloading fi rearm before attempting
to use it. You must read and understand the workings of this
muzzleloading fi rearm as explained in this manual before its
use.


4.  ALWAYS use only Black Powder or Pyrodex product to
charge your muzzleloading fi rearm.


5.  NEVER use smokeless powder or a mixture of smokeless and
Black Powder (duplex loads), or the wrong type or granulation
of Black Powder or Pyrodex product.


6.   ALWAYS keep the muzzle of your fi rearm pointed in a safe
direction and handle ANY muzzleloader as if it were loaded.
7. NEVER prime your muzzleloading fi rearm until you are
ready to fi re it.

8.   NEVER load a charge into the bore of your fi rearm when it
is in a “PRIMED” condition (ignition cap/ primer on nipple or
breech plug).


9.  ALWAYS keep your fi rearm safety in the “SAFE” position
when handling or loading your muzzleloader.


10.  NEVER transport or carry a “PRIMED” or “CHARGED”
muzzleloader in or on a vehicle.


11.   ALWAYS wear appropriate eye and ear protection when
shooting your muzzleloader.


12.   ALWAYS make sure your muzzleloader is UNCHARGED”
before attempting to load it.


13.  ALWAYS be sure that the barrel and nipple/breech plug
passage is clear of any obstructions.


14.  (A) BUCKWACKA : NEVER exceed the recommended
maximum powder charge of 150 grains of Black Powder
FFG, Pyrodex RS or Select, by volume or its equivalent, or a
maximum of three 50 grain Pyrodex pellets.


(B) MINIWACKA : NEVER exceed the recommended
maximum powder charge of 100 grains of Black Powder FFFG,
Pyrodex P by volume or its equivalent, or a maximum of
two 50 grain Pyrodex pellets.


(C) TOMWACKA : NEVER exceed the recommended
maximum powder charge of 100 grains of Black Powder
FFG, Pyrodex RS or Select, by volume or its equivalent, or a
maximum of two 50 grain Pyrodex pellets.


15.   NEVER use lubricants when shooting any sabot/bullets.


16.   ALWAYS be sure the projectile, projectile assembly, or
shot cup and shot load is fi rmly seated on the powder charge.


17.  NEVER point your muzzleloading fi rearm at anything you
do not intend to shoot.


18.  ALWAYS be sure of your backstop and the safety of
bystanders before you fi re your firearm.


WARNING: A projectile or shot payload may ricochet
off flat, hard surfaces such as rocks or water, and may
cause serious injury and/or death to the shooter or
bystanders and damage to property.


19.   NEVER fi re a muzzleloader with worn, broken, or modifi ed
parts. Any replacement parts should be obtained from MDM
specifi cally for the MDM fi rearm you are using.


20.   ALWAYS keep your muzzleloading fi rearm pointed in
a safe direction for at least one minute in the event your gun
fails to fi re, and DO NOT OPEN THE BREECH FOR THIS
ONE MINUTE WAITING PERIOD.

21.  ALWAYS remove your fi rearm’s percussion cap or primer
before crossing a fence, climbing a tree, or negotiating other
obstacles.


22.   NEVER hand a “CHARGED” muzzleloader to another
person.


23.   NEVER lean a “CHARGED” and “PRIMED” fi rearm
against a tree, wall, vehicle, or any other surface.


24.  NEVER store a “CHARGED” muzzleloading fi rearm in a
home, camp, vehicle, or other structure.


25.  NEVER attempt to clean a “CHARGED” muzzleloading
firearm.


26.   ALWAYS unload your muzzleloading fi rearm when not in
use, and never store a “LOADED” muzzleloader.


27.   ALWAYS thoroughly clean and oil your muzzleloader
after a day afi eld. Black Powder and Pyrodex products are
very corrosive. 


28.  NEVER lend your muzzleloader to anyone who is not
thoroughly familiar with its operation or the basic rules of
muzzleloading safety. Be certain that anyone using your
muzzleloading fi rearm has read and understands this Safety
& Instruction Manual.


29.   NEVER drink alcoholic beverages or take any type of
drugs before or during shooting.
